Not Just sports this time!
The intrigue over where Princess Kate, Prince William's wife, has been since she went in for abdominal surgery in February has been at a fever pitch the last few weeks with wild theories as to what's going on at Buckingham Palace. Well, the poo really hit the fan this past weekend, where it is Mother's Day in Great Britain, and Buckingham Palace released a picture of Kate with her three children. An "aww" moment, right? Um, not so much, as major media outlets had to pull the picture once it was proven it was a fake! Kate later gave a statement (not in person- she still MIA), apologizing for the the fake pic, but with no other details. The British royals are once again proving they really know how to bungle things with the public. More to come on this, I'm sure!
Here is a link to some of the memes Buzzfeed gathered for some chuckles, I'm riding with the Gone Girl theory! :) Betcha Harry and Meghan are quite happy to be out of London during this hot mess! https://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/kate-middleton-memes?fbclid=IwAR0K8kZl1bZYlPHm6fv0MXLUKMuRzA_Vx9dAPQLVm3lS5zP4xxOJSmviwkY
The Oscars happened, and the award winners pretty much went how most expected, with Oppenheimer picking up seven statues, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. Next up was Poor Things, with five wins and the Foreign Film , The Zone of Interest, picking up four awards. Jimmy Kimmel did an admirable job hosting the show. Overall, a good show, but my (and many other highlights were John Cena coming on stage naked, with just the Best Costume envelope covering his junk!). The biggest winner though was Barbie co-star, Ryan Gosling, singing his character's tune, "I'm Just Ken", in a Marilyn Monroe-Gentlemen Prefer Blondes stage performance! And he even had Aerosmith guitarist Slash making a cameo! 10's 10's 10's all around for the Gosling! Of COURSE I'm going to throw open the thirst trap moment for you to feast your eyes on below!
And for those who missed it (have you recovered from the Cena pic yet?), here is Ryan Gosling living his best life at the Oscars, via ABC's You Tube:
In the Sportsball gym bag. Well, NFL Free Agency has started, meaning players whose contracts are up can sign with their team or another team. and as i write this on Wednesday (and I have an Oppenheimer movie review still to write up! Send donuts and the Red Bull drink! We be chatting about the Red Bull racing team mess later!), and already lots of players signing big contracts with new teams. There was also some trades as well. I'll note the more significant ones briefly:
The Bill Belichik era is officially over, as the New England Patriots traded their starting quarterback Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars for what most sports pundits felt was for a box of deflated footballs (definite inside joke there).
New York Giants star running back Saquon Barkley signed with the Philadelphia Eagles for a three-year-deal worth up to 45 million.
Another big name running back is on the move , with Derrick Henry leaving the Tennessee Titans for the Baltimore Ravens on a two-year 16 million (could be 20 million if bonuses are met). This just makes the Ravens even scarier, teaming Henry with QB Lamar Jackson!
49ers backup QB Sam Darnold has left the Niners for the Minnesota Vikings for a one-year, 10 million dollar contract.
Minnesota Vikings quarterback has signed with the Atlanta Falcons on a four-year-deal worth 180 million, with 100 million guaranteed! Thats a stunning amount of money and time for a QB that's had a history of injury issues, and is no spring chicken.
With the San Francisco 49ers side, tight end Charlie Woerner signed a three-year-deal worth 12 million.
And in really big (bad) news for the Niners, DB Arik Armstead has rejected the 49ers restructured contract offer, and is now poised to enter free agency. This would be a major blow to the 49er defense, and to the Bay Area, as Armstead has been a constant presence and contributes to the community, and is well-liked among just about everybody. He has been with the 49ers since he was drafted out of Oregon in 2015.
The Niners then went and made two free agent signings, one for former Buffalo Bills Defensive End (DE) Leonard Floyd, who pundits feel will be the perfect bookend for Nick Bosa, based on his stats and play, and for DE Yeter Gross-Matos from the Carolina Panthers (two-year, $18 million contract).
Some good news, QB Brock Purdy married his long-time sweetheart Jenna Brandt in his home state of Iowa this weekend! Here's to marital bliss for this young couple!
In San Francisco Giants news, the Giants, after finding no trade partner, released third baseman JD Davis, saving the Giants six million against the MLB luxury tax. JD was a good Giant, so we wish him well.
A quick note from women's tennis: Romanian Simona Halep has had her four year ban reduced, and will play in her first pro match at the Miami Open next weekend. For more on the history, check out the link below: https://www.bbc.com/sport/tennis/68505734
In Formula One news, I posted earlier the recap about the race, but I just want to give 18 year old rookie Oliver Bearman his flowers after being thrown into a Ferrari F1 car at the very last minute after Carlos Sainz appendix decided it was time to leave Carlos body. "Ollie" then proceeded to come from a P11 grid start position to earn points for Ferrari in Saudi Arabia by placing P7! Gotta give the kid his flowers for such a well run race, that 36 hours ago, he had no idea he would be in! Congrats Ollie! Sainz will be back in the seat in two weeks when we have the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. But Ollie has put F1 teams on notice: That he is ready for the big stage (track)!
Locker Room Buzz: <checks F1 Twitter>, Christian Horner still lead principal at Red Bull as of Wednesday! What has happened since the last grab bag, is that co-owner of the Red Bull Team, Helmut Marko, is in a battle to remain as co-owner of Red Bull, which has brewed into a civil war with Marko and Jos VerStappen, Max's dad, and Christian Horner over who is best to continue Red Bull's future. After Saturday's qualifying race, and upon learning of Marko's comments that he may be ousted at Red Bull, Max (one of the most dominant F1 drivers in the last few years), responded by saying: Max described his loyalty to Marko as “very big”, said that he has always made it clear Marko is an “important part in my decision making”, and even went as far as declaring “Helmut has to stay”.
It's going to be an interesting two weeks before the Melbourne Grand Prix!
The Buzz is seeing a lot smoke with regard to where former Denver Broncos quarterback will land. The most buzz is that Wilson will land the starting QB job with the Pittsburgh Steelers. That could be complicated though, as the Chicago Bears have the #1 draft pick, and are looking to possibly move their current QB, Justin Fields. More to come as free agency picks up! And just in, Steelers backup QB Mason Rudolph has signed with the Tennessee Titans. Hmm...
