San Francisco Giants Trade for Seattle Mariners pitcher, unload two players

In what I see as both a roster and salary dump move, the San Francisco Giants traded outfielder Mitch Haniger and pitcher Anthony Descalfini to the Seattle Mariners for starting pitcher Robbie Ray.

Per ESPN: Ray, 32, is owed $73 million over the final three seasons of his contract and is coming off Tommy John surgery. He is expected to return sometime after the All-Star break. His contract contains an opt-out after the 2024 season, when he is scheduled to be paid $23 million.

Haniger, 33, spent five seasons with the Mariners before signing a three-year, $43.5 million free agent deal with the Giants last winter. He is due $17 million this season, after which he has an opt-out, and $15.5 million in 2025. Also from ESPN: DeSclafani, 33, is in the final season of a three-year, $36 million deal and is owed $12 million in 2024.

To even out the 2024 salaries, San Francisco will send $6 million to Seattle, which could slot Haniger into a corner-outfield or designated hitter role. Ray and Haniger each will receive $1 million assignment bonuses for being traded.

So, we open up roster space, but we get a starting pitcher who won't be available to till after the All-Star break. Methinks GM Farhan Zaldi has more moves to make after this clearing of roster space. We shall see.
