Australian Open: Quarter and Semi-final match-ups

Updated: Apr 16

In the Australian Open Quarterfinals in Melbourne , some of the results shook down like this: No. 4 seed Coco Gauff overcame a flood of unforced errors in her first two sets to eventually defeat Marta Kostyuk, 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 match to move to the semis.

Defending Australian champion Aryna Sabalenka won her match , 6-2, 6-2 over No. 9 seed Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets. Gauff and Sabalenka will face off in the semi-finals in yet another huge match-up! Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska took on Linda Noskova in the last of the ladies quarterfinals, and pulled out a straight-set victory, 6-3, 6-4 to move to the semis! The highest ranking female player left, No,12 Zheng Qinwen took on Anna Kalinskaya for the final spot in the final four in the semis, and I was asleep for this, so the final tally and winner was 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 in favor of Qinwen.

On the men's side, it is the first time in Grand Slam history that the top six ranked players made any Grand Slam final!

No.12 seed Tommy Paul, the last American male left, gave No.1 seed and defending champion Novak Djokovic a good run, but eventually lost, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

In one of the highly anticipated matches, No.4 seed Jannik Sinner took on No.5 seed Andrey Rublev, and won the match rather easily in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3. Jannick and the Carrot Nation move onto the semis! Just checked, and it will be a clash in the first semi between Sinner and Djokovic! Must See Tennis TV on ESPN2!

No. 3 ranked Daniil Medevev took on upstart No. 9 seeded Hubert Hurkacz in the afternoon match, and these two played a scrappy game! Almost four hours, and going to five sets, the first ever Polish player to make it to the quarters battled hard against Medevev, who

just would not give up, was running on fumes near the end, but Medevev found a second gear in the fifth and final set to defeat Hurkacz 7-6 (7-4 tie-breaker), 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to move on to the semi final! I'd also like to make a note to the powers that be there should be stronger enforcement of the the rules when a player tosses their racket, either over the net or towards the sidelines. Hurkatz did it in the 3rd round yesterday on a missed volley, and flipped his racket over the net towards Medevev. Not even a warning was issued! Hmmph!

In the last quarterfinal, No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz took the court against No.5 seed Alexander Zverev, and got the shorts beaten off of him! Carlos double-faulted to open the match, was down two games after eight minutes, and down two sets before he finally fought back and won a set. Zverev played quite possibly the best tennis of his career, going two sets up before Carlos got back into the match, but it was too little too late, as Zverev won the match, 6-1, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 to move onto the semis. My boo Carlos is just 20 years old, so there is plenty of time to rebound in his career moving forward.

Will post semis results later in the week, and a quick summary of the winners of the first Slam tourney of the season on Sunday. No predictions on the ladies side, but I suspect it will be a Djokivic-Medevev match...or a Sinner-Zverev final! :)
