Howdy all. Another odd week, and a much shorter post. SF Giants: I nearly fell out of my seat when i read this news that the San Francisco Giants signed one of the biggest free agents on the market this off-season, a player I also really wanted. GM Buster Posey signed shortstop Willy Adames to a seven-year, 182 million dollar contract, the largest in SF Giants franchise history (Posey had the largest as a player, at 167M)! Adames passed his physical ( we need not relive the Correa physical debacle), and immediately gives the Giants a big bat in their line-up, as Adams has had several 30 home run seasons, was a consistent hitter for his now former team, the Milwaukee Brewers. Adames will also give long-term consistency on the left side of the infield, as he and Matt Chapman are signed for a long time! Finally, a player I really wanted signs with the SF Giants!
Oh, and the New York Mets landed the biggest fish in the market, agreeing with free agent out fielder Juan Soto for a 15 year, 765 million dollar deal!!! It's the largest deal in baseball history, and unlike Ohtani's NONE of it is deferred! Michael Conforto left the Giants for a one year deal with...<chokes> the LA Dodgers!
College Football: Well the 2024 regular season is over, and the football committee has released their playoff tier of the top 12. Last week's losses did punish Alabama and Miami, who were left out! After Georgia barely squeaked out an OT win over Texas in the SEC bowl, they get a first round bye, as does Oregon, who fought hard to hold of Penn State in the Big 10 Championship. So without further ado, here is your college football playoff grid!
Also it was announced that the Cal Bears will take on the UNLV Rebels in the LA Bowl on Dec 18th!
49ers: Boy, did this team need a game like today, a thrashing of the Chicago Bears at Levi's, 38-13! After two tough losses, and a roster plagued by injuries, the Niners basically had their way with the Bears in the first half, leading 24-0, and crushing the Bear on total offense, 319-4!!! The defense sacked QB Caleb Williams seven times (without Bosa!), while the offense racked up almost 500 yards, with Brock Purdy stat line being 21/25 for 325 yards, TE George Kittle had six catches for 151 yards, and 3rd string running back Issac Guerendo rushed for 78 yards and two touchdowns! It's a short week for San Francisco as they host the LA Rams Thursday Night on Amazon Prime. These are the same Rams that ran rampant over the Buffalo Bills defense and winning the upset game of the day, 44-42!
Well, what to say about the Thursday Night Game other than I have to do TWO Niners recaps? First, with a score of 12-6 in favor of the Rams, it's th first time in 50 years in matches between these two teams that a touchdown was NOT scored. Second, in the first half alone, there was a NFL season-tying record of 11 punts by both teams. Third, Dre Greenlaw returned for his first game of the season after rehabbing his achilles, and was a menace on the field for the first half. Greenlaw did not return for the second half though, as his knee wasn't feeling right.
Now we get to the low point of the season- Greenlaw's replacement , LB De'Vondre Campbell, according to coach Kyle Shanahan, REFUSED to go into the game to replace Greenlaw, and the nation saw Campbell leave the field into the locker room. Coach Kyle said on Friday (hence the late posting of this blog!) that Campbell will no longer be part of the 49er organization! We have yet to hear from Campbell about his actions, so THAT will be interesting to hear. With this loss, the San Francisco 49er's are out of the 2024 playoffs (yes, statistically there is a .0001 chance, but C'MON!). It's time to look at the draft (watch those bowl/playoff games!) to reset for the 2025 season, specifically on the offensive line. The Niners next play the Dolphins in Miami on the 22nd.
FYI: We have a potential Super Bowl match up game on Sunday, as the Buffalo Bills take on the Detroit Lions.
There will be no Grab Bag next week, as I needs a break! So y'all stay safe, dry and fabulous!
