San Francisco 49ers: Let's rip the band-aid off, the Niners have not won a game in Minnesota since 1992, and extended that streak to eight games without a a win in the Twin Cities as the Vikings beat he Niners, 30-16. Didn't help that QB Purdy was sacked SIX times, or a blocked kick eventually resulted in a Vikings TD. Bright spot was Purdy was accurate on his throws, and the offense had two scoring drivers that looked like Niner football. Also of note is how backup Running Back (RB) Jordan Mason has continued to fill in nicely for CMC, having another 100 yard rushing game.
Before the game, it was announced that star running back CMC/Christian McCaffrey was officially placed on the injured reserve and will miss the required four games as CMC is still dealing with an unpredictable achilles/calf injury. Breaking: The good news after the game is that coach Kyle Shanahan said there were no injuries...but on Monday, it was announced that star wide receiver Deebo Samuel has suffered a calf sprain and will miss "a couple of weeks". *sigh* Update: Safety Talanoa Hufanga is eligible to play this Sunday to beef up our defense! Next up is the Rams at SOFI South (almost 60% of fans will be of the red and gold variety), and Los Angeles has their own injury list problems, with both their star wide receivers out with injuries (Kupp and Nacua), and only scored ten points on their blowout loss to Arizona.
It has been an overall consensus by NFL pundits that linebacker Fred Warner is probably the BEST defensive player in the NFL these days, so I'm going to throw some love towards this awesome player and person! Enjoy!
NFL: Was it a full moon this week? Besides the Niners loss, the Ravens and Lions also were upset, and New Orleans gave the Cowboys a spanking with a 41-19 victory on the road in Dallas, and then on Monday Night Football, the Atlanta Falcons upset the heavily favored Philly Eagles!
A scary moment occurred in the Thursday Night Football game as Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered another concussion against the Buffalo Bills. This is Tua's third concussion in two seasons, and many folks in the NFL said the young man should retire and collect his automatic 60 million (167 million if he retires due to the injury). Miami has placed Tua in the injured reserve so he will definitely miss four games.
San Francisco Giants: Can the season just END already? The Giants were shut out for three games IN A ROW last week. Best I can say about this team is at least the team isn't as bad as the Chicago White Sox, who are over 100 losses and counting. One bright spot was that outfielder Heliot Ramos became the first player to hit a splash home run into McCovey Cove batting right-handed, so there's that. Oh, after Thursday's loss to the Baltimore Orioles, the SF Giants are officially eliminated from playoff contention.
College Football: With the #1 ranked Georgia Bulldogs barely beating Kentucky 13-12, and #2 Texas dropping a 56 point victory on their cream puff opponent, Texas is now ranked first in the AP College Football Rankings. Locally, the Cal Bears beat the San Diego Aztecs, 31-10 to go 3-0 , and will fly cross-country to play their first in-division ACC opponent, the hapless and widely derided 0-3 Florida State Seminoles. The Seminoles will be playing like they have something to prove, so Cal better be ready for that- a major point in Cal's favor is that they have one of the nation's best defenses, so this could be a very entertaining game, if our offense doesn't turn the ball over.
A key game to watch on Saturday will be Michigan, at home, hosting and initiating USC into Big 10 play. USC is ranked 11th and favored to win, but playing the Wolverines in Michigan can be tough!
Movie Review time! It's a classic from back in the late 1950's, but this flick is almost a requirement to get one's gay card validated, but fear not, this film is just a joy to watch, not just for the LGBTQ community! "Auntie Mame" the first one, starring Rosalind Russell in the lead role. The official studio synopsis of the film: Mame Dennis (Rosalind Russell), a progressive and independent woman of the 1920s, is left to care for her nephew Patrick (Jan Handzlik/Roger Smith) after his wealthy father dies. Mr. Babcock (Fred Clark), Patrick's assigned executor, objects to Mame's unconventional way of living and tries to force her to send Patrick to prep school. As Mame and Patrick grow closer, Mr. Babcock tries to discipline Patrick and threatens to separate the two if Mame does not comply with his wishes.
The brushstrokes are accurate in that description, but the movie is so much more, thanks to the larger than life screen presence and her motto in life, LIVE! LIVE! LIVE! If you are having a down say, or a case of the blues this film is for you (as I mentioned to my sister Dani!). I can basically break the film down to how it worked for me in three acts:
Act One: Fantastic! Some of the most fun I've had watching a movie, and that is because of the growing relationship between Mame and her nephew, young Patrick and how they absolutely bond. The young actor playing Patrick, Jan Handzlik was a perfect casting choice to roll with Russell's wild ride; the whole movie could've been all the years Mame and young Patrick spent together! I did some research, and short version was what I suspected in that Jan, who left acting for a successful career as a lawyer, said that Rosalind treated him more like a son than an actor, and I can say it definitely shows in the film!
Act II sags a bit, compared to the first part, but it has its moments, especially the fox hunt scene (lots of physical comedy here). The final act, we have the college age Patrick, and after spending his schooling years at a very "top drawer" academy, returns to Mame as a bit of a privileged snob, so Mame sets out to fix that, at a party that is absolutely over the top, and has a monologue/story by one character about a ping-pong match that is now required memorization by any aspiring drag queen! Rather long trailer below, by today's standards, but should give you a good idea of what the film is about. Obviously a near perfect 10 for me, and when I'm in a down mood, this is definitely a go-to flick for me! It would be ghastly, simply ghastly if you did not treat your self to this film! Can be found on TCM (Turner Movie Classics) or TUBI.
Have a great weekend, and Go Niners! (Oh, and those readers who HAVE seen the movie, don't be a sucker and spoil some of the movie's most well-known lines!).
