Wimbledon Wrap! Grand Slam #3: Major upsets, agonizing player withdrawals, rematches in the last days, and Princess Kate!

Start of Wimbledon- First week notables: Osaka wins first match, loses second.

Sir Andy Murray plays final match at Wimbledon. American Jessica Pegula out in the second  round in an upset.

An emotional British Sir Andy Murray after his last Wimbledon appearance.

Third round found third ranked Carlos Alcaraz going five sets to beat American Francis Tiafoe. Second ranked ranked Coco Gauff easily won her 3rd round set. Number one ranked Jannik Sinner advances to the third round by beating his opponent in straight sets. American Taylor Fritz won his match to move to the sweet 16, as did Rune, Medevev, Djokivic on the men's side.

On the ladies side, two major upsets in the 3rd round, as tenth ranked Jabeur lost in straight sets, and number one ranked Iga Swiatek was upset by an unranked player in three sets. So the women's side is wide open for the title, while many of the top ranked men's players will battle each other to reach the men's final.

Wimbledon Sweet Sixteen time! And the upsets continued on Sunday as nineteenth ranked Anna Navarro upset second ranked Coco Gauff, 6-2, 6-3 in an all American match. Meanwhile, American Madison Keys had to withdraw from her match in the third set due to injury, and unranked players Lulu Sun and Donna Vekic moved on to the quarterfinals after winning their matches.

Coco Gauff- USA

On the men's side, American Tommy Paul won his match in three sets, as Carlos Alcaraz won his match in four sets, Jannik Sinner beat fourteenth ranked American Ben Sheldon in three sets, and Danii Medevev barely played a set, as his opponent had to withdraw due to leg sprain in the first set, so Medevev moves on to the quarters!

Week two: Fourth-ranked Elena Rybakina, thirteenth ranked Jelena Ostapenko, twenty-first ranked Elina Svitolina all won in straight sets, while American and eleventh ranked Danielle Collins lost her match to Barbora Krejcikova, leaving Anna Navarro as the only woman to represent the American's on the women's side.

On the men's side, #2 ranked Djokivic easily handled fifteenth ranked Holger Rune in straight sets, ninth ranked Alex de Minaur and 25th ranked Lorenzo Musetti won their matches in four sets. The match of the day though was between American Taylor Fritz, ranked 13th, and fourth ranked Alexander Zverev, as Fritz was two sets down but fought his way back to win in five sets! Fritz and Paul are the first two Americans to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals since 2002, when Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras!

Quarterfinals: Alcaraz dropped the first set of his match, but in the end, Carlos beat Tommy Paul in four sets. In an upset, Daniil Medevev beat #1 ranked Jannik Sinner in 5 sets that took four hours to complete! Lorenzo Musetti, the lowest ranked (#25) men's player, upset Taylor Fritz in five sets. After these matches, there are now no Americans on the men's side. Djokovic moves on to the semis as his opponent, Alex de Minaur had to withdraw from the match due to hip injury.

Spain's Carlos Alcaraz gets air on this shot!

On the ladies side, Donna Vekic beat Lulu Sun in three sets, while Jasmine Paulini defeated Anna Navarro in straight sets. With Navarro knocked out, there are no American women left in the tourney, while Paulini becomes the first Italian woman to make the semis! Rybakina and Krejcikova won their matches in straight sets to reach the semis as well.

Semis: Eighth-seeded Jasmine Paulini fought back from dropping the opening set and defeated Donna Vekic, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 to move on to the finals, while Barbora Krejcikova fought back from an early deficit to defeat fourth-seeded Elena Rybakina, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. We are set for the women's final no one was expecting on Saturday! This will be Paulini's second Grand Slam final, as she was a finalist at the French Open, so back to back appearances for Paulini!

Jasmine Paulini- Italy

In the Men's semis, we had a rematch from last year's Wimbledon semi, with third-seeded Carlos Alcaraz again facing off against fourth-seeded Danii Medevev. Carlos dropped the first set, but fought back to beat Daniil again, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to reach his second consecutive Wimbledon final, and his second back-to-back Grand Slam.

Novak Djokovic defeated Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets, so we will see ANOTHER rematch

of Carlos and Novak in a Wimbledon final! Note: Just read that the WORST seats on Centre Court for the men's final are starting at 10,000 Euros!!! I need to find an F1 driver to take me (Lando? Charles? George?). :)

Wimbledon Finals! On the women's side, we have two 28 year-olds vying for the trophy. One, Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic, has around ten doubles and mixed doubles trophies and won the French Open in 2021 and is ranked 31st in the rankings. The other side of the net is Jasmine Paulini, the first Italian woman to reach a Wimbledon final and ranked 7th in the world, and who lost in the French Open final a few weeks ago. Whoever wins this match will be the 8th winner in eight years to claim the trophy. The typo trap is gonna get me, so I will be using the ladies first names. Barbora dominates the first set in 35 minutes, winning 6-2, with a 90% winning serve rate in first set. Jasmine came out in the second set, and was more aggressive as Barbora seemed to lose energy, with too many unforced errors, and Jasmine took advantage, winning the 2nd set, 6-2. Third and final set finds Barbora finding her service game, and unlike the second set, maintained her cool and energy, and while Jasmine fought her in the last game, setting up three Championship break points, Barbora finally hit the winning shot to secure the ladies Wimbledon Championship! At 100-1 odds, Barbora definitely was the underdog to prevail! Congrats!

2024 Ladies Wimbledon Champion Barbora Krejcikova !

Cheerio for the annual Breakfast at Wimbledon Sunday, hope you enjoyed your strawberries and creme, as we have the Gentleman's Final between 3rd ranked Carlos Alcaraz and second ranked Novak Djokovic. One is 21 years old, the other 37 years old. One has four Slams, the other has over 20 Grand Slams, I'll let you do the math! :) Besides the many celebrities in attendance, Centre Court was graced by the 2nd public appearance of the Princess of Wales, Kate, after having been diagnosed with cancer a few months ago, looking splendid in Wimbledon purple dress. As for the match, the very first game was epic! Twelve minutes, 20 points, before Carlos won the point! One of the longest points played at Wimbledon! That first point set the tone for Carlos, as Novak seemed a bit sluggish against the cheetah, As Carlos forehand shot had 20 winners to Novak's six, which resulted in a 6-2 set win for Carlos. The second set seemed like a duplicate of the first, as Carlos continued to pound his serve in, with a winning sev percentage of 88%, and Novak with no answers fell to Carlos, by the same 6-2 score. The third set, Novak seemed to find both his rhythm and gameplay against his opponent, forcing Carlos into several unforced errors, and Novak slamming seven aces on his serve. Up to this point in the match, Novak had not broken Carlos serve, but then Carlos wobbled!

Up 5-4, serving at 40-0 and the championship point, Carlos choked, and Novak broke serve to make the set a 5-5 tie! Novak went on to win his game on serve, now 6-5, Novak. Carlos also went on to hold serve to bring the set to 6-6 and force a tiebreaker. Novak in tiebreakers is 24-3. You can now update that to 24-4 as Carlos wins the tiebreaker, 7-5, to win the set, the match, and his second Wimbledon trophy, back to back years! Carlos is also only the sixth player EVER to win the Euro Tunnel Combo in the same year: The French Open and Wimbledon. Carlos has also moved to 4-0 in Major tourneys to start his career; only Roger Federer (7) and Monica Seles (6) are ahead of Carlos. Congrats Carlos and we look forward to seeing you in the Olympics, especially in doubles with your idol, Rafael Nadal!

And that's a wrap for Wimbledon 2024. Next and last Grand Slam of the year is the US Open in September, but we will have some tennis before then with the Olympics! Cheerio!

Update!! I JUST got these snaps in from the Wimbledon Champions Ball...both 2024 champions look just marvelous!
